Human rights online is best described in; "The Resolution on the right to freedom of information and expression on the internet in Africa" (ACHPR), UN Human Rights Council "The promotion, protection and enjoyment of human rights on the Internet" and the "International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights" (ICCPR).
The basic human rights as described in the Charter of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, have now become human rights on a digital platform. These rights are; the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education to name a few.

Freedom of speech is a hotly contested issue. What might be considered freedom of speech in one region and culture could be construed as hate speech in another.
Religious, socio-economic and cultural beliefs define freedom of speech differently. Opinions published online are instantaneously available globally.
Simply put freedom of speech is a minefield of adverse reactions, opinions and cultural believes. Freedom of speech on the internet should be adjudicated according to a global perspective that is accurate and up to date.

Freedom of information is governed in South Africa by the Promotion of Access to Information Act. The South African government at, www.gov.za, describes the purpose of the Promotion of Access to Information Act as follows:
"to ensure that people can exercise their constitutional right of access to any information that is required for the exercise or protection of any right and is held by: the State or another person."


the right to truth
Fake news has become the scourge of the internet. Fake news can be peddled by unscrupulous persons with the intent to profit from it. In other instances false news is inadvertently spread through digital media without the knowledge that it is false.
Regardless the motivation or ignorance of the act, false news can be highly damaging to ones reputation and society as a whole.
